Vietnam Beyond the Cities
Northern Vietnam reveals itself gradually. Limestone valleys give way to ancient forests, mountain villages and rice terraces where walking becomes the natural way to experience the landscape.
Beginning and ending in Hanoi, this active journey moves through Tam Coc, Cuc Phuong National Park, Pu Luong Nature Reserve and the rural valleys of Mai Chau. Days are spent boating, cycling and following village trails, balanced by comfortable stays in carefully selected lodges and retreats.
How the Journey Unfolds
Arrival in Hanoi
Arrive in Hanoi and transfer privately to your hotel. The remainder of the day is left open, allowing time to rest or begin exploring the streets and cafés of the Old Quarter at your own pace.
From Hanoi to the Limestone Valleys of Ninh Binh
Travel south to Ninh Binh, where limestone peaks rise abruptly from fields and waterways. Explore Tam Coc by sampan, visit the quiet Thai Vi Temple and continue by bicycle through villages and farmland. Later, visit Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital, with the possibility of climbing Ma Yen Mountain for wider views across the valley.
Cuc Phuong: Forests, Primates and Early History
Enter Cuc Phuong, Vietnam’s oldest national park and one of the country’s most important protected forests. Visit the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre before continuing on foot through tropical vegetation. The day also includes the Cave of Early Man, where traces of prehistoric occupation connect the landscape to a far older human story.
Cuc Phuong adds more than wilderness to the route. Its conservation work and archaeological history reveal the many layers held within northern Vietnam’s forests.
Into Pu Luong Nature Reserve
Cross a mountain pass into Pu Luong Nature Reserve, arriving amid forested slopes and terraced valleys. After lunch, walk through Cham Village towards its traditional waterwheels, following a varied trail past fields, stilt houses and open rural landscapes.
Lan Village and Hieu Waterfall
Spend a full day on foot through the valleys of Pu Luong. Descend towards rice fields and Lan Village, where traditional weaving remains part of local life. Continue through forest paths, mountain farmland and small settlements before reaching Hieu Waterfall for lunch and time beside the water.
Kho Muong and the Road to Mai Chau
Follow village paths and off-road trails towards Kho Muong, a secluded settlement surrounded by limestone hills. Continue through forest and open farmland to Bat Cave before returning for lunch. Later, leave Pu Luong and travel deeper into the northwest towards Mai Chau.
Walking the Valleys of Mai Chau
Set out from Na Cut village and walk beneath bamboo forests towards small Thai communities hidden among limestone mountains. Terraced fields, cassava plots and traditional stilt houses shape the route, with opportunities to pause and meet people whose lives remain closely connected to the surrounding land.
Return to Hanoi
Enjoy a slower morning at the lodge before leaving the mountains behind. Return to Hanoi, where the landscapes of the previous days give way once again to the movement and energy of the capital.
Hanoi Beyond the Familiar
Experience Hanoi through the rituals and places that shape everyday life. Begin beside Hoan Kiem Lake, continue through the Old Quarter and visit sites connected to the city’s cultural and modern history. Local coffee, bun cha and a final stop at a neighbourhood bia hoi bring the journey to a distinctly Hanoi close.
Departure
The final morning is at leisure before your private transfer to the airport. The journey can continue into central Vietnam, the northern highlands or the limestone waters of Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay.
A journey measured not only in distance, but in the changing terrain beneath your feet.
