East Africa Grand Safari
East Africa is best understood as one connected landscape. This journey follows that natural progression from Kenya's central highlands and the conservation work of Ol Pejeta to the Rift Valley, the Masai Mara and the vast plains of northern Tanzania.
The route crosses borders without losing its rhythm. Lakes, conservancies, open savannah and volcanic highlands each reveal a different expression of the region, culminating at Ngorongoro before a final descent towards Arusha.
How the Journey Unfolds
Nairobi: Arrival in East Africa
Arrive in Nairobi and settle in after your flight. The day is kept deliberately light, allowing time to rest before the safari begins beyond the city.
Ol Pejeta: Conservation on the Laikipia Plateau
Travel north towards Mount Kenya and the open grasslands of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Game drives introduce a landscape known for both wildlife and conservation, including important populations of black and white rhino. The conservancy setting also allows the safari to begin at a measured pace, away from the busier national parks.
Lake Naivasha: Into the Great Rift Valley
Descend into the Great Rift Valley and continue to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake framed by acacia woodland and volcanic escarpments. The quieter surroundings provide a change of tempo, with birdlife, hippo and lakeshore scenery replacing the open plains of the previous days.
Masai Mara: Kenya's Great Wildlife Plains
Continue into the Masai Mara, where rolling grasslands and riverine woodland support an exceptional density of wildlife. Morning and afternoon game drives seek lion, elephant, giraffe, cheetah and the many plains species that define this ecosystem. During the migration season, the Mara may also receive vast herds moving north from the Serengeti.
Lake Victoria: Between Two Great Ecosystems
Cross into Tanzania and continue towards Lake Victoria. This transitional day gives the journey breathing space between the Mara and Serengeti, while introducing the scale of Africa's largest lake and the quieter landscapes along its shores.
Serengeti: Across the Endless Plains
Enter the Serengeti and spend three days exploring one of Africa's most expansive wildlife landscapes. The experience changes with the season: migration herds move through different parts of the ecosystem, while resident predators and plains game remain present throughout the year. Longer stays allow the safari to move beyond individual sightings and settle into the rhythm of the plains.
The Great Migration is a natural movement rather than a fixed event. Its location varies with rainfall, grazing conditions and the time of year.
Ngorongoro: Highlands and Crater Floor
Leave the Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Highlands, where forested slopes rise above an immense volcanic caldera. Descend to the crater floor for a concentrated safari among grasslands, wetlands and acacia woodland. The change in altitude and terrain gives the final safari chapter a character entirely its own.
Arusha: Journey's End
Travel towards Arusha for your onward arrangements. The route can conclude with an international departure or continue into another part of Tanzania for a slower final chapter.
From the Mara to the Serengeti, the border changes; the landscape does not.
